We spend a third of our lives asleep and most of our decorating budget everywhere else. This issue of the Journal is about flipping that for one weekend: three changes, ranked by how much darker and quieter they make the room.
First: go blackout at the window
The fastest fix is an Eclipse Roller with the blackout fabric. If you prefer the softer look of fabric folds, order a Flat Roman or Pleated Roman with the sewn-in blackout lining — the room-facing side still looks and drapes like linen.
Second: kill the halo
Light leaks around a shade, not through it. An outside mount overlapping the frame by a few inches on each side beats an inside mount for darkness every time — the reveal-hugging look costs you a bright outline at dawn. Every shade we make offers both mounts in the configurator.
Third: insulate for quiet
The honeycomb cells of the Hive Light trap a layer of air against the glass — it is our most energy-efficient shade, and that same trapped air takes the edge off street noise and early-morning temperature swings.
All three are in the current edit and every fabric ships as a free swatch.
